Shelly Sanford is a managing partner for mass torts at Watts Guerra LLP in Austin, Texas.
Shelly’s primary practice involves dangerous pharmaceutical products, failed medical devices, commercial disputes, complex arbitration proceedings, real estate development losses and delays, finance and mortgage industry disputes, cyber-theft and security breaches, and serious injuries or death.
Currently in mass actions, Shelly is a member of the Plaintiffs Steering Committee in the Ethicon Physiomesh MDL 2782 involving Ethicon’s withdrawn hernia mesh. Shelly is also evaluating Invokana amputation cases, as well as governmental and individual actions involving the overprescription and over-promotion of opioids. Shelly has co-chaired a HarrisMartin conference dedicated to National Opioid Litigation. She is a designated speaker about opioids at multiple upcoming seminars across the country. Watts Guerra LLP represents multiple large and small counties in Texas. Shelly is also part of a national group of trial lawyers representing governmental entities in New York, Illinois and California.
Ms. Sanford has been outside counsel to the State of Texas and State of Oklahoma in Medicaid Fraud litigation, and has been appointed to the Plaintiffs Steering Committee in several large MDLs, including Vioxx, Bextra/Celebrex, Fosamax and Digitek.
Ms. Sanford attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she obtained a journalism degree and reported for the Austin American-Statesman newspaper. Shelly graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law and interned for the Hon. Raul Gonzales at the Supreme Court of Texas in 1992. Before joining the Austin offices of Watts Guerra LLP, Shelly worked for almost 7 years in Houston with the late John O’Quinn, then at Goforth Lewis Sanford LLP and Shelly A. Sanford PLLC until moving to the Austin area. Shelly has been a frequent speaker for bar and legal associations, has published journal articles in the area of preemption and is a recipient of the Mass Torts Made Perfect Clarence Darrow Award for her achievements in mass actions.
Ms. Sanford is certified in domestic and international arbitration and has passed the U. K. Solicitor’s examination for qualified foreign lawyers. Shelly considers her greatest accomplishment to be her family and extended family, which now ncludes two grandsons.
